So Many Bobs!

We Are Legion(We Are Bob) is a novel by Dennis E Taylor about a software engineering genius named Bob. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen this book on Audible and passed it up for something else. After almost a whole year of having this book jammed down my throat by audible’s recommendation, I finally cracked and downloaded it as one of my free books for the month. I should have listened to the audible gods. Maybe someday I will learn that they are rarely wrong.

An Audible original released at the end of 2016, We are Legion tells the story of Bob. Bob sells his software company and decides to have his head cryogenically frozen when he dies. The idea is simple. His head will be preserved until technology allows a body to be grown and then popsicle Bob head can be thawed and attached to it. The next day he is unexpectedly killed crossing the road. He then wakes up over 100 years later and finds that his brain has been harvested, scanned, and has been uploaded into computer hardware and is slated to be the controlling artificial intelligence of an interstellar spaceship/probe.

The rest of the book and the following 2 books of the Bobiverse series get really interesting when Bob builds more probes/clones himself exponentially. Each new bob has the same memories and basically the same personality, but with slight differences. We are Legion is a light-hearted, intelligent, nerdy ride through space that is cleverly crafted with plenty of classic Sci-Fi references to geek out over. We Are Legion, We Are Bob is by far the most entertaining book I’ve listened to this year so far. With so many other big sci-fi books in the spotlight (The Martian, Ready Player One) this would be an easy series to overlook. Don’t! For the love of the Bob, read this book! You won’t regret it. If you think you don’t like audio books, or somehow got it into your head that audio books are cheating and it doesn’t really count as reading, or if it’s somehow against your religion, or you just like the smell of paper books, or you really just wish I had paid more attention in third grade when my teacher Mrs. something or other(I just sat here for a good 10 mins trying to remember her name and apparently I am getting old and can’t remember) talked about the evils of run on sentences… Okay, I’ll stop. On a serious note, these books were practically made to be an audiobook. The narrator’s performance is FANTASTIC! So, now you have 2 choices ahead of you:

1.Try the book out for free, listen to it while you drive to work or while you do your house chores. This is the cool kid option. You want to be a cool kid, don’t you?

2. Spend your hard earned money to pay for something you could have gotten for free. Oh, and please if you go with option 2 don’t try reading it while you drive to work.

3. Nope, no third option. Not reading this book isn’t an option. The audible recommendation gods won’t leave you alone until you do.
