Distractions are everywhere, and finding them is easy

Distractions are the best!

This post is going to be a little short. I have a lot of things to get back to, like finishing season 2 of The Expanse. It is really tough being a blogger sometimes or maintaining a website when there are so many distractions to keep you entertained. I am not talking about the distractions like my full time job or doing chores around the house. These kinds of distractions are necessary. I’m also not talking about the good distractions like family and friends, after all working 50+ hours a week I already don’t get to spend enough time with my family. This is why most of my posts are written late at night when everyone else is asleep. I’m kinda like Batman in a way… well, except I’m writing about books and games and stuff and he is gliding around Gotham punching bad guys… but other than that I would say we are pretty much the same person.  Ok, staying on track now. So, a typical day I go to work, come home, eat dinner and spend some time with my family. Maybe watch some Youtube with my son or play a board game. Then my son and wife go to bed. I get out my trusty black mask and my laptop, put on some head phones to listen to a pod cast or audio book. Then I say to my self, “Batman, you should write something… Work on your website…” I of course sit on the couch with my laptop and mouse and then promptly double click the Magic the Gathering Arena Icon. “just one quick game, then I’ll work on the website.” So, now that I have rambled on for way longer than I probably should have, I give you my nightly distractions.

1. Distraction Magic!

Magic… I was fully enthralled with this game growing up. As a kid I was sure I was going to be a professional MtG player. For any of you readers who know the game I played from revised all the way up until Mirage came out, maybe a little longer but Mirage is the last set I really remember. For those of you that don’t know. MtG(Magic the Gathering) is a collectible card game. You buy cards in packs like baseball cards, but the cards are all spells and creatures that you can summon to try and kill the guy you are playing against. Winning the game very often came down to who mowed the most lawns to get the most money to buy the most cards.

So about a bajillion years later Wizards of the Coast announce they are doing a digital version of the card game and there is going to be a beta test. I sign up and sure enough a couple months later I get in and am fully addicted to the game yet again. If any of you guys are interested in trying it out I do have a few beta keys left. Leave me a comment or get my info from the contact page.

2. #OMG did you see that tweet? #SocialMedia #Distraction

OK, so it’s not really all social media that is a distraction. I do check Facebook at least once a day because that’s where I connect with my real life friends and family, people I grew up with. I do however have a real problem with Twitter. Yes please go follow me! here, have a link to my twitter! have 2 even! I don’t know what it is about twitter that sucks me in, but I can admit I have a problem. I love the fact that I can connect with and have conversations with people who do what I do(blog, not fight bad guys in my underwear at night). I think what really got me hooked though is when I posted a picture of my family and me meeting David Tenant and Billie Pipper at Wizard World Cleveland and it got retweeted by @wizardworld and then liked by Michael Rosenbaum. Getting to interact with people who you are a huge fan of is really exciting.

3. An endless stream of distractions

Currently, Amazon Prime video. I haven’t been so hooked on a show since Battlestar Galactica. The Expanse is free with prime right now, and it is such an amazingly good show. I don’t even think you need to really be into scifi to really enjoy the show. Kinda like how you don’t really have to be a fan of horror or zombie stuff to really enjoy The Walking Dead because the show isn’t really about the zombies. It’s about the people going through one traumatic event after another. The Expanse is kinda like that… but in space… without zombies(kinda)… oh and no crossbows. I think that has got to be the best description of the Expanse I have ever seen. It was originally on the sci-fi channel, but the show has now been picked up by Netflix. So, stop doing important stuff and go watch it… after you are done wasting your time here of course.

4. Distracted by Hermits

So, I suppose I could probably put 4 and 5 together because both of these distractions are on YouTube, but this is my list and I don’t want to. Hermitcraft! If you watch any sort of video game related stuff on YouTube, you may have come accross Hermitcraft at some point. Hermitcraft isn’t an actual YouTube channel. It is a Minecraft server where a bunch of YouTube content creators all play minecraft together. They build some pretty epic stuff, and I hate when people use the word epic but there really is no other way to describe it. These guys are full time creators doing this for a living. Hours apon hours of time is spent building, recording, and editing these videos. They are currently in season 6 so there are Thousands of episodes that you can watch. These guys truly are creative on a whole new level and seeing the time and effort that goes into their content is something else. Here are a couple of the Hermits channels that I try to keep up with:

Grian(New to S6)

There are a bunch of other hermits you can watch, these are just a few that I watch consistently… ok so these are the ones that I’ve watched every one of their episodes. There is also a Hermitcraft recap channel that is fun to watch to get caught up with what everyone else is doing on the server.

5. Critical distractions

This is last on my list because its really only a distraction once a week, but it is one of my favorite distractions. Its pretty easy to explain. There is a group of people who play D&D once a week and they stream it live. Sounds pretty dorky right? You betchya, and I love it! Just wait, it gets even better… ready? The people playing are not just a bunch of random nerds sitting around a table rolling dice… They are FAMOUS voice actor nerds sitting around a table rolling dice! Hopefully none of them find this and take offence to that… is it ok to call someone a nerd if you are a nerd yourself?? Anyways, the people playing…

Matt Mercer(DM)- You probably know him as McCree in Overwatch, Levi in Attack on Titan, or Leon Kennedy in Resident Evil.

Ashley Johnson- Remember Chrissie Seaver in Growing Pains? Or how about Ellie in The Last of Us?

Laura Bailey- Her first major role was on Dragon Ball Z as Kid Trunks, but she has been in tons of AAA video games. She is Jaina Proudmoore in World of Warcraft, Chun-Li from Street Fighter, and tons more.

Liam O’Brien- From the self proclaimed lord of the Outland, Illidan Stormrage to one of the 4 horsemen, War.

Marisha Ray- She’s been in the persona games, Fire emblems, and Final Fantasy XV!

Sam Riegel- He does machines! And if you didnt get the reference, he voiced Donatello in games and on TV from 2003 to 2010. He has also been Spider-Man and Pheonix Wright among many other voices.

Taliesin Jaffe- Again, tons of different anime and games. franchises like street fighter, final fantasy and world of warcraft. Yep, He was Blanka.

Travis Willingham- Any Full Metal Alchemist fans out there? Travis started to gain his fame as Roy Mustang. Much like the rest of the party hes been in more games and anime than I can count.

All of these guys are insanely talented voice actors and you can feel their excitement while watching them play. The story Matt weaves for them is as good if not even better than the best fantasy novels out there. The end of the first campaign was very emotional. Following along with the characters journey over a two and a half year long campaign you really feel invested in the characters.

Throughout the course of the campaign there have even been a number of special guests who join in the D&D fun as well. Guests like Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, Chris Hardwick, Patrick Rothfuss, and Ashly Burch.

You can check out their new channel here, and watch the first campaign on Geek and Sundry

Now its your turn! Give me some more distractions down in the comments. I would love to hear what distracts you from getting stuff done. Thanks for letting me ramble, I cant believe you made it this far. After you leave me a comment, don’t forget to check out the campaign we started on gofundme to help support creative writing in schools!
