Ben Galley

Ben Galley is an author of dark and epic fantasy books who currently hails from Victoria, Canada. Since publishing his debut The Written in 2010, Ben has released a range of award-winning fantasy novels, including the weird western Bloodrush and the epic standalone The Heart of Stone. He is also the author of the Chasing Graves Trilogy.

Bloodrush

Bloodrush is a western/fantasy set primarily in the frontier town of Fell Falls, America. On the edges of a desolate desert, there are guns, wild locals, and monsters called railwraiths. There is also, as the title hints, a kind of blood magic that I won’t spoil any more than I just did. Oh, and faeries too!

Tonmerion Hark

Tonmerion, a young teenager is sent to live with his aunt when his father, Lord Hark, the Prime Lord of the Empire of Britannia, is found murdered. Much to Merion’s displeasure, his aunt lives in the New Kingdom.

Accompanied by his faerie friend, Rhin he leaves his father’s estate across the sea to Fell Falls. Merion is naturally very put out to find that his aunt doesn’t quite live the way he is used to and has a rather undesirable job as the town’s undertaker.

Determined to get back to London to find out who murdered his father and reclaim his substantial inheritance, Merion decides to work for his aunt to earn some money to get back to his home.

Magic

The magic in this book is not something I really want to go in depth about. Part of what I loved about this book was learning about the magic with Merion. If you like really unique/odd but well thought out magic systems, then you will definitely enjoy the magic in Bloodrush.

Will you like it?

In conclusion, this was an incredibly fun book. I enjoyed the mash-up of western and fantasy a ton. This coming-of-age tale full of laugh-out-loud humor, epic battles, and a super unique magic system is definitely worth picking up. I’ve read a few books by Ben Galley now. It both astounds me and pleasantly surprises me, how many unique ideas I find in his books. Ben doesn’t just write excellent fantasy books. He writes excellent fantasy books that don’t conform to the rules of traditional fantasy. I cannot wait to see what he comes up with next.
